We do a quick & discrete initial newborn assessment of baby’s breathing, heart rate, APGARs & temperature as soon as baby is born and on your chest.
The first hour or so is the Golden Hour of bonding, feeding and resting together. We want this time to be as undisturbed as possible for you and your family.
We do a full comprehensive initial newborn exam after the Golden Hour, typically when the baby is around 1.5 hours old.
Then, after the birth, I provide six weeks of well-baby care for your newborn.
I will call you to do a phone check-in at 12-24 hours after birth. Then I will come out to your home at 2-3 days postpartum to do another in-home newborn exam, including Critical Congenital Heart Defect (CCHD) screening, newborn metabolic screening and filing the birth certificate & ordering your baby’s social security number for you.
I will see your baby again at 2 weeks and 6 weeks at our office, and more often if needed.
We have an in-house pediatrician, Dr. Agrawal, who can do your newborn’s hearing screening at your first office visit. She also provides full pediatric care for many of our Barefoot Babies after they have completed their 6 weeks under midwifery care.
